The Philosophy Of The Week is a custom that is unique to the Harmony By Karate program. Based on the ancient Japanese traditions of philosophical dialogues between students and teachers, it was originally introduced to the dojo by Sensei Johnin 1994.

These discussions help create an attitude in the dojo of learning, personal growth, mutual respect, understanding, and tolerance of the views and ideas of others. This attitude distinguishes the Harmony By Karate dojo from almost all others. Sensei John uses the Philosophy Of The Week as a powerful tool to lead people out of their everyday frame of mind, giving the students a chance to reflect honestly about themselves, their environment, and their impact on the world around them. With this in mind, Sensei creates his philosophies to help students take a negative element from the past and turn it into a positive element for the future. He believes strongly that reversing negative thoughts and attitudes changes behavior, which, in turn, changes society.

From 1997 to 2000, Sensei John's "Philosophy of the Week" was heard every Friday morning on Z-100 radio: his community service was to reach out to New Yorkers and give them something to think about and discuss.
